Graigue Standing Stone

To be honest I was on my way to another site when I came across Graigue.
Having seen images of this standing stone I had always thought the site was far from the beaten track.    

This giant of a stone has split into two.
The larger of the slabs remains upright with the smaller one now at a forty five degree angle (resting on two large stones).
The upright stone is over 3.5 meters in height and over 2.5 meters in width.
The smaller slab is 3 meters in height and over 2 meters in width.

Access - The stone can be seen very clearly from the road, it is in a field just before you reach the quarry. Parking will be a problem as the road is very narrow, to get up close to the stone you will have to climb a bank (small) and hop over a fence.


  

Knocknakilla Standing Stone

Knocknakilla Standing Stone can be found very close to the more well known and famous Knocknakilla Stone Circle.

The standing stone sits high in a field with good views all round.
The Stone is over 1.5 meters in height and has a very distinct rectangular shape.

To see the standing stone from the road you  need to be travelling north towards Glantane/Millstreet.
If you are coming from the other direction the stone will not be visible.

Access - from the road you walk up a drive way,  this leads you into the field that the stone is in.

This site is well worth checking out along with the many other more well known sites close by.

Bocan Stone Circle

When first spotted from the road my expectations for this circle left me in a rush to get up closer for a better look. 
Sad to report this circle now has only 7 stones left standing and is pretty much a mess (see bottom image) !!.

Originally the 20 meter wide circle was thought to have 30 stones, in 1816 there were 12 stones still standing so recent times have really not been kind to this site.

Of what remains the tallest of the stones is around the 2 meter mark in height (from the 4 on the east side of the circle) the remaining 3 stones (on the west side) are smaller and are close to 1.5 meters in height.

Bocan stone circle will leave you disappointed due to the state of the site, but I would still recommend a visit for superb views.  It would not take much imagination to visualize what a stunning site this once was.

Access:-   You can see the main stones of the circle from the R238, parking will be anywhere you can find just off the main road.
From there you can reach the circle by climbing up  to the top of a field, when you get to the top you can see the circle very well.
To get closer to the circle you will need to scale a new barbed wire fence.

Scrahanard Wedge Tomb

This wedge tomb and standing stone (with a grass covered cairn), can be found in a field which is marked by a sign as a Dolmen.
The tomb is also known as The Bealik.  The large capstone is over two metres in length and about two metes in width.
This wedge tomb is listed as a national monument, so it would be nice if the site got a clean up ( that it deserves) before the tomb is totally overgrown by the hedge.

Hurlstone Standing Stone

This is a giant of a stone, it is much bigger than either of the images would have you believe.
The stone stands to a height  of 1.5 meters and is roughly the same in width.
The hole is 20cm's in diameter.

It is thought that this may be all that remains from what was once a wedge tomb.

Access - The stone is located just off a very narrow road so parking is tricky.
The stone is not visible from a car as the field it is situated in is banked.
